This one day course covers the basic principles of image clarification for print publication reproduction.
The morning sessions address: Practical image reproduction; Why we must edit digital images; Distinctions between inkjet and print production; Basic tonal and color adjustments; Digital image bit depth; High-bit color; and Evaluating submitted digital images.
The afternoon sessions cover: Adjusting internal contrast; HSL (hue, saturation, and luminance) channels; The histogram; RGB Color models; Working spaces and Profile Mismatches; Working in Camera Raw and Lightroom; Effective production workflows; Image resolutions; Inkjet vs CMYK production differences; and Basic color management issues.
The second day builds on the groundwork laid on day one. The morning sessions include: Compelling reasons to edit images in RAW vs JPEG formats; In-depth training in the two critical building blocks of digital imaging: Understanding Color on the Printed Page and The Histogram and Image Tonality. All of imaging issues center around these topics.
The last session of the day: Production choreography; Resizing images; Sharpening images for print; Understanding RGB-to-CMYK color modes and effective color conversion; Reading and understanding proofs (what to approve and what to question); Comparison of PDF files with online Contract (printed) proofs and (Kodak Insite) proofs; Editing in RGB vs CMYK; When to convert RGB images to CMYK; and Production Color Settings.
The third day builds on the prior two days of training. The morning sessions address Print Based Color Managent, Print Reproduction Fundamentals; and Pixels-to-Print (understanding the physics and science of the conversion); and finally, the art of performing press OKs. Students learn how to evaluate quality of print at the inspection station. They are taught the production limitations of the printing press and how to achieve the results they deserve effectively.
The afternoon session includes: a field trip visit to a printing facility. This extremely important experience enlightens the students to the reality of print production by seeing what happens to digital images when they enter the physical world of lithography. Once they see their images coming off the press, they better understand how to prepare their files for best results. Visits to the pre-press, proofing, and pressroom departments will have a significant impact on their image preparation.
Each session is taught in participating (hands-on) classroom style using both course images and publisher-supplied images.

NOTICE: These training sessions should not be confused with current Photoshop courses.
There are dozens of excellent seminars, conferences, and online courses teaching Photoshop tools and tricks. You may have participated in these courses and therefore should be familiar the tools available in the software. However, typical Photoshop classes/courses are designed for photographers (amateur and professional) and focus on preparing images for the Internet and inkjet output.
Image Clarification Training teaches you how to prepare images for publication presses; issues rarely addressed in courseware.

I've produced images for press throughout my career, spanning both traditional and digital pre-press. When I started my printing career as a pressman, I quickly realized that I could not improve the quality of the image on the printing plate. I then set out on a mission to shape photographic images to look great AND print well on press. I've maintained that quest for four decades.
I worked with Adobe (before Photoshop) on RGB-to-CMYK color separation tables (profiles) and standards for digital image reproduction. I served as a Photoshop Beta site for nine years, and as a Certified Adobe Software Developer. I designed and produced Eddy award-winning image processing sofware for Adobe Photoshop.
I know how this process works and I'll teach your staff to understand digital imaging from the lithographic perspective.
